William Edwards Bridge

This bridge was built in 1756. When the bridge was completed by William Edwards, after three failed attempts which have passed into folklore, it was quickly recognised to be an engineering marvel. Single stone span of 140 ft, it easily surpassed the Rialto in Venice and was thought to be the longest span in the world. Marton were proud to be awarded the prestigious contract of refurbishing and strengthening this important structure, and the contract was successfully completed and awarded a public opening.

M4 Motorway Junction 39 - Brombil Lane Underpass and Junctions 47 to 49 Bridges.

Contract Value: £870,000.00

Construction Period: 20 weeks

The Contract involved complex coordination of various disciplines including traffic management, removal of existing safety fences, constructing crossover points for contra flows, excavation of existing carriageway surface, captive blasting of the concrete bridge deck, waterproofing the bridge deck, laying kerbs, re-surfacing the carriageway, re-erection of safety fencing, road markings, and replacement of bridge parapets. All the above undertaken in four separate phases at each of four separate locations.

Junctions 47 to 49 involved three bridges and was completed, within budget, in 11 weeks instead of 12.

Junction 39 was completed in 7 weeks instead of 8, again within budget. Marton were complemented and thanked by the Welsh Assembly for their efforts and performance in ensuring the motorway was re-opened to its full capacity ahead of schedule.

Pontamman Bridges, Ammanford, Phase 1

Client: Carmarthenshire County Council

Contract Value: £119,000.00

Construction Period: 10 weeks

Involved traffic management, demolition and replacement of reinforced concrete wingwalls, removal and replacement of bridge parapets, new safety barrier, installation of duct covers and frames, excavation and reconstruction of footpaths including waterproofing.

Pontamman Bridges, Ammanford, Phase 2

Client: Carmarthenshire County Council

Contract Value: £59,000.00

Construction Period: 10 weeks

involved dealing with the flow of the river, clearing vegetation off masonry arch bridge covered by a preservation order, raking out and replacing defective mortar with lime mortar, replacing missing masonry, replacement of fencing and security gate, placing concrete in areas of scour within the river, concrete repairs to the soffits and walls of the bridges, and replacement of holding down bolts to the road bridge.
